UPDATE: We are a long way from ice out -but in case you’re curious!
The Town of Sunapee has been keeping track of ice-out dates since 1869. Last year ice out was officially declared on March 18th – the earliest date in recorded history. In 1893 the official ice out was May 13th… For many years ice-out on Lake Sunapee was declared when Artie Osborne could navigate his boat from Georges Mills to Newbury Harbor without breaking ice. Artie’s son Richard has since carried on this tradition. The bob houses have disappeared and the ducks are gathering… It won’t be long before we’re putting docks and boats back in the water!
